Francisco Cerundolo is the 24th seed here at the US Open and is ranked 27th on the ATP Tour. The Argentine has been one of the breakout stars of the past few seasons, winning his first ATP title in Bastad and establishing himself as a fixture in the top 50 player in the world. While most of his success has been on clay he showed his mettle on that hard courts of Miami, reaching the Semi-Finals. This proves that he is more than a clay-court specialist, and he will be liking his chances of winning here against the 2012 US Open champion Andy Murray.

Andy Murray is currently ranked #49, jumping almost 100 spots in the rankings since the beginning of the year. The former world number one has really gone through some tough times, but seems almost back to his best now and is a dangerous floater in this year’s US Open draw. He has a solid 20-14 win-loss record on the year and will be backing himself to do well here at Flushing Meadows, however he was suffering from cramping in Cincinnati so it remains to be seen if he has overcome that. His First Round opponent is the very tough Francisco Cerundolo so Murray is in for a huge battle here.

This is a very tough match to call, and is one of the more evenly matched First Round encounters at the US Open. Both men have a chance of winning but we are backing Andy Murray. Once he has gotten over his cramping issue, his experience will be invaluable here, especially over five sets. Francisco Cerundolo showed that he is no pushover on this surface earlier in the year in Miami, but I think he will fall just short here. Both men to win a set is practically a given so that’s a good market to go after, but if looking for a winner, take Andy Murray to advance.
