The Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos clash in Monday Night Football in week 1 NFL action at Lumen Field. The Denver Broncos are coming off 7 wins and begin the Nathaniel Hackett era. The Seattle Seahawks are coming off 7 wins and enter the 13th year under coach Pete Carroll.
The Denver Broncos bring in an offensive coach and pulled off the trade for Russell Wilson. With receivers Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler, the Broncos all of a sudden are cooking with gas on the offensive side and become an exciting team to watch. Defensively, the Broncos are still a more than respectable unit with players such as Randy Gregory, Bradley Chubb, Pat Surtain II and Ronald Darby. The Broncos haven’t made the postseason since the 2015 season, and they’ve looked like a franchise with no direction as of late. Now, with their first legit quarterback since Peyton Manning, the Broncos have put themselves in the thick of a super competitive AFC West.
The Seattle Seahawks move on from Wilson, and obviously their expectations decrease quite a bit. A combination of Geno Smith and Drew Lock at quarterback isn’t the answer. However, the Seahawks still have talent as DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett are one of the better receiving duos in the league and the offensive line should be improved with Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas. Defensively, the secondary is still anchored by Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs, while Uchenna Nwosu, previously with the Chargers, is an underrated linebacker who could make even more plays in this 3-4 style. The quarterback issue is a big one, but I wouldn’t be so quick to say the Seahawks are in a complete rebuild and ready to go into tank mode.
The Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 Monday games. The Seahawks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in September and 16-7 ATS in their last 23 games as an underdog. The under is 8-3 in Broncos last 11 games overall. The over is 5-1 in Seahawks last 6 games overall. The Broncos are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
This is a tricky game because I’m not sure the Seattle Seahawks are as bad as a lot of the public believes they are. It’s also never easy to play in Seattle, regardless of how the team looks. However, there’s no doubt the Broncos are a considerable better team, and they’re going to want to set the tone early while also winning this game for its new quarterback. I don’t love laying big chalk in the first game while we’re still feeling teams out, but the Broncos getting up big early and then holding onto a cover is a likely scenario here. Give me the Broncos by a touchdown or two.
