Pittsburgh had trouble with the Orioles over the weekend, falling 1-0 Friday and 6-3 Saturday. In the Sunday game the Pirates scored three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh in a big 8-1 victory. Bryse Wilson put up 5.0 frames with one earned on four hits.
Starting pitcher for the Pirates Monday will be Tyler Beede. This year Beede is 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA over 18 appearances (one start). In 32.0 innings he’s posted 29 hits, 13 earned, 13 walks and 31 Ks.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they took a 6-5 win over Colorado on Friday, then lost a tough one 3-2 in game two. On Sunday the Diamondbacks blew an early lead but recovered for an eventual 6-4 victory. Starting pitcher Zach Davies managed 5.0 clean innings, four hits, two walks and three Ks.
As starter for the Monday opener, Arizona will go with Zac Gallen. Across his 20 starts, Gallen is 6-2 with a 3.31 ERA. In 111.1 innings total he has 41 earned on 84 hits and 32 walks with 106 Ks.
The Pirates are 51-121 in their last 172 road games and 15-38 in their last 53 Monday games. Pittsburgh is 1-5 in their last six in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the D-Backs are 2-6 in their last eight overall and the under is 5-2-1 in their last eight Monday games.
PICK: I’m going Arizona here. Probably not touching it due to the thick line, though. Gallen is 2-0 over his last three starts. In that stretch he’s got 17.2 total innings with four earned, 11 hits and four walks. As for Beede, he gave up four earned in 1.1 innings during his last appearance, but overall he’s been doing well lately. Still, this should be a solid opportunity for the Diamondbacks to get a victory.
