The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Xavier Musketeers meet Saturday in college basketball action from Cintas Center. West Virginia is 6-1 on the year thus far. The Mountaineers are coming off a win over Florida. As for Xavier, they’re currently 5-3 after a win versus Southeastern LA in their last matchup. West Virginia won their first four games this year over Mount St. Mary’s, Pittsburgh, Morehead State and Penn. After a loss to Purdue, the Mountaineers picked it up against with wins over Portland State and Florida.
In the Florida matchup back on Sunday, the Mountaineers were up 41-33 going into the second half and hit a 43-22 run from there in an 84-55 blowout win. Tre Mitchell led the team on 17 points and eight rebounds; Erik Stevenson added 15 points.
Over on the Xavier side, they won their first three games versus Morgan State, Montana and Fairfield. After a loss versus Indiana, the Musketeers took out Florida, lost to Duke and lost to Gonzaga. Xavier bounced back with a win over Southeastern LA on Wednesday.
In the game versus Southeastern Louisiana, the Musketeers didn’t have much trouble. Xavier jumped out to a 43-19 halftime lead and cruised from there in a 95-63 blowout. Zach Freemantle doubled up on 15 points with 12 rebounds in just 22 minutes of work.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Xavier. The Musketeers’ three losses this year have all come to ranked teams. Furthermore, Xavier was competitive in all three of them; the biggest margin of defeat was just seven points against Duke. The Musketeers have been scoring very well this year with 78 or more points in seven of eight games.
As for West Virginia, they’re no slouches either. The Mountaineers’ only loss came to a great Purdue team and they’ve hit 68 or more points in every matchup so far. I like this Saturday game to be competitive the whole way with Xavier eking out a cover. Should be a good one.
