The Cal Poly Mustangs and the Pepperdine Waves meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Firestone Fieldhouse. Cal Poly is currently 3-3 on the year following a win versus Pacific in their last game. As for Pepperdine, they’re 4-2 so far. The Waves lost to UCLA in their last game. Cal Poly hit a rough 1-3 stretch over their first four games this year. The Mustangs fell to San Francisco, Stanford and Mount St. Mary’s (with a win over Bethesda) in that time. Game five was a win over Idaho 82-71.

On Monday versus Pacific, the Mustangs fell behind 32-23 at the break. Cal Poly stormed back in the second on a 39-26 run and took a 62-58 win. Brantly Stevenson topped the team on 23 points and eight rebounds.

Over on the Pepperdine side, they beat Rice in their opener this year then lost to CSU Fullerton in game two. The Waves hit three wins in a row after that, beating Alabama State, Vanguard and UC Irvine.

Last Wednesday the Waves took their second loss of the year. Pepperdine scored just 29 points in the first and 24 in the second during a 100-53 blowout loss. Houston Mallette and Jan Zidek led the team on 13 points.

PICK: I’m probably sticking with Pepperdine in this one. The Waves had a bad game against an overwhelming opponent in their last matchup versus UCLA. Pepperdine shot 35 percent from the field in that one and got out-rebounded 44-26. That said, the Waves scored well in their first four games with 71 or more points in each. Pepperdine should match up pretty well with Cal Poly, who has only eclipsed 68 points twice this year so far. If the Waves play to their capabilities here, they should cover.
