The Sam Houston State Bearkats and the Oklahoma Sooners meet Monday in college basketball action from Lloyd Noble Center. Sam Houston is fresh off a 19-14 overall campaign last year and a fifth-place finish in the conference. As for Oklahoma, they went 19-16 a season ago and made it to the second round of the NIT. Sam Houston State equaled their win total from 2020-21 last year, going 19-14 overall with a 13-5 run in the Western Athletic Conference. The Bearkats finished in fifth place, behind New Mexico State, Seattle, Stephen F. Austin and Grand Canyon.

Sam Houston came out of non-conference play at 5-8, and would only lose consecutive games once the rest of the year. After a win over Cal Baptist in the conference tourney, the Bearkats fell to Grand Canyon in their second game.

Over on the Oklahoma side, they hit a 19-16 overall record last season with a 7-11 mark in a tough Big 12 Conference. The Sooners landed pretty far down the standings with that effort, ahead of only Kansas State and West Virginia.

The Sooners had a tough run in the 2022 calendar year, winning just three games from January 1 to February 26. Oklahoma would ultimately lose to Texas Tech in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament and St. Bonaventure in the Second Round of the NIT.

The Bearkats are 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 overall and 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 road games. Oklahoma is 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 Monday games.

PICK: I’m probably staying with Oklahoma. The Sooners do lose a few key pieces from last year’s team, including three starters averaging over 10 points per game. That said, Oklahoma has a nice crop of experienced talent on their roster. Grant Sherfield figures to have a good season after posting 19.1 PPG and 6.4 APG last year for Nevada. He should play a big role for the Sooners, and if guys like senior Jalen Hill (9.1 PPG) can keep things rolling Oklahoma should improve in 2022-23.
