Guaranteed Rate Bowl: Oklahoma State vs Wisconsin 12/27/22 College Football Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Wisconsin Badgers do battle Tuesday in the college football Guaranteed Rate Bowl from Chase Field. Wisconsin got through the season at 6-6 overall. The Badgers lost to Minnesota in their most recent game. As for Oklahoma State, they’re 7-5 this year and coming off a loss to West Virginia. Wisconsin hit a 3-3 run over their first six games this year. The wins in that stretch were over Illinois State, New Mexico State and Northwestern. Another 3-3 run followed across the next six outings, with wins over Purdue, Maryland and Nebraska. 

Back on November 26 versus Minnesota, the Badgers had a 16-13 edge going into the final quarter. Wisconsin gave up 10 points in the final frame for a 23-16 loss. QB Graham Mertz finished with 170 yards, and Chez Mellusi led the rush with 75 yards on 19 carries. 

Over on the Oklahoma State side, they won five straight versus Central Michigan, Arizona State, AR-Pine Bluff, Baylor and Texas Tech before a loss to TCU. The Cowboys went 2-4 over their final six, beating only Texas and Iowa State. 

In the West Virginia game on November 26, the Cowboys were up 10-7 at the break. Oklahoma was outscored 17-9 from there however, and lost 24-19. QB Garret Rangel managed 178 yards, and Ollie Gordon led the rushing attack with 136 yards and a score. 

The Badgers are 2-7 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 1-4 ATS in their last five in December. The under is 6-1 in Wisconsin’s last seven in December. 

Meanwhile, the Cowboys are 6-0 ATS in their last six bowl games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games. Oklahoma State is 6-2 ATS in the last eight in December. 

PICK: I might take a stab on Oklahoma State here. The Cowboys aren’t exactly coming off their best effort versus West Virginia. Oklahoma State gave up a whopping 250 rush yards in that one and went just 8-of-21 on third-down conversions with their own offense. The Cowboys haven’t been over 20 points in any of their last five games. Their production needs a shot in the arm, but the team is more than capable of putting up points. 

As for Wisconsin, they should provide a comparable challenge in this matchup. The Badgers have been at 23 points or fewer in each of their last four games (going 2-2), so don’t be surprised if this one turns into a low-scoring defensive battle. Should be a fun game to watch regardless.
